What is “Feedback Loops Occupational Therapy and Biofeedback Services”

People seek occupational therapy services when the demands of everyday life become difficult to manage. Pain, stress, illness, or other conditions can limit participation in daily activities—often affecting a person’s sense of self and contributing to frustration and anxiety.

In my practice, stress is addressed as a key factor that can contribute to symptoms and interfere with engagement in meaningful activities and roles. Many people have not been taught practical self-regulation strategies (ways to calm the nervous system). I help clients learn specific techniques to support nervous system regulation, along with biofeedback—a process that shows in real time how the body responds as new skills are practiced. This helps individuals maximize their overall performance and improves a sense of agency in their lives.

Sensors placed on the body increase awareness of muscle tension, finger temperature, respiration, heart rate, and brain waves—signals that reflect nervous system activity. The biofeedback provides cues (lights, sounds, numbers, and interactive activities) that, with the occupational therapist’s guidance, help clients successfully practice new strategies and gradually shift their responses. Often, measurable changes in the body can be detected by the biofeedback data even before a person can clearly feel them. In this way, biofeedback offers an objective answer to “How am I doing?” in a form that is easy to understand. It also reinforces an evidence-based truth: mind and body are deeply connected. Whether stress contributes to symptoms or arises from managing a physical or emotional challenge, calming the nervous system can reduce symptoms and support overall health.

All care is grounded in an occupational therapy framework. Stress and other presenting concerns are addressed within the context of the whole person, including personal history, self-perception, habits and routines, organization, and performance skills. This holistic view helps identify what is interfering with daily function and guides an approach that supports meaningful, sustainable change.

Each of us can improve how we regulate our own physiology. Come in and learn skills to manage stress and/or pain, calm the mind, relax the body, improve attention, and maximize performance. Together, we will create a personalized, concrete plan that supports meaningful improvements in physical and emotional health. All that is needed is motivation and a willingness to explore new possibilities.
